oil change

Oil change shops by state

Once the vehicle has been jacked up, and secured, the first thing to do is remove the oil cap ontop of the engine.

Now remove the oil drain bolt from the oil pan on the engine, and let the oil drain into a oil catch pan like in this photo above. CAUTION !  Some drain plugs / bolts on transmissions look just like the oil drain plug / bolt from the engine. Make sure not to remove the oil drain bolt from the transmission.

Once the oil is finished draining, which takes about 5 minutes, Put the drain plug / bolt back into the oil pan on the engine. DO NOT over tighten the bolt, as this will result in stripping out the threads inside the oil pan. Make sure not to under tighten the bolt as this will result in the drain plug leaking, and or falling off, and loosing all the oil in the engine, and causing total and complete engine failure, which will result in destroying the engine.

Next remove the old oil filter with a oil filter removal plyers. Some oil filters are very tight during removal. When the oil filter is loose, some oil will drain out of the oil filter.

Once the oil filter has been removed, with a clean rag, wipe the surface of the oil filter housing to make sure there is no dirt, or that the old oil filter gasket is not stuck on the surface as this will result in a small to major oil leak that will eventually destroy the engine.

Install the new oil filter. Slightly lube the new oil filter with oil on the gasket, then tighten the new oil filter by hand ONLY. Once the filter is screwed in tightly, turn it 1/4 of a turn to make sure the filter is on snug. Too loose of an oil filter will cause oil to leak out of the engine completly destroying the engine.

The next step is to fill the engine with engine oil. Most but not all 4 cylinder engines take 4 quarts to fill up. After pouring 4 quarts of oil into the engine, check the oil level, and add as needed. Once the level is full, start the engine, let it run 20 seconds, then shut the engine off, wait 2 minutes, then check the oil level once again. The last thing to do is look under the engine, check the drain plug, and oil filter to make sure the new oil is not leaking.

Oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. Every 5,000 mile oil change will not harm the engine either. Check the engine oil atleast once a week unless the vehicle has high milage, then it should be checked alteast twice a week.
